This is a Wiki for the use of the residents of HouseChai.

So what's a wiki? It's essentially a web page which can be easily edited via a web browser; this way, any member of the household can put up web content without needing to work through SteveHuff. This page is publically visible (though we can make other pages private if we so desire); it should be accessible from inside or outside our network as http://www.vecna.org/wiki/.

Some types of information we might put on this wiki include:

household policies and documentation
long-term or short-term plans
personal projects
schedules and calendars

and whatever else we can think up.

How do I start?

To gain access to this wiki, perform the following steps:

register your WikiName. A WikiName needs to start with a capital letter and have at least one more capital letter somewhere in the middle; traditionally they're made by concatenating one's first and last names.
Send email to SteveHuff (Unknown action "email") to let him know what name you've registered. He'll change permissions on this page (and others as appropriate) so that you can start editing pages and creating new ones. If you don't notify him, you'll still be able to leave comments on some pages, but you won't be able to make changes. (Needless to say, if you're not a resident of HouseChai, you're not likely to get edit perms unless there's some other good reason.)

You don't need to wait for confirmation from SteveHuff to start creating pages, however! You'll see a link to your WikiName from the UserSettings page; feel free to use that as a home base for creating other pages. If they need to be linked in to other parts of the site, you can do that later on.

Don't be afraid to create new pages that don't have any content yet. Such pages referred to as "stub" pages and will appear in your browser with a dashed red underline. Leaving stubs in your pages is a way of leaving notes to yourself for later; what's more, unless you've locked down your pages, stubs are open for other wiki users to fill in. You don't have to do all the work yourself! In a similar vein, if you see a mistake in a page in this wiki, fix it! Although it's rude to delete other people's pages willy-nilly, you don't need to be shy about making edits; the wiki saves older versions of each page, which means that it's easy to undo edits (follow the "Page History" link at the bottom of each page to see older versions).

Privacy

If you're the owner of a page, you can follow the "Edit ACLs" link at the bottom of the page to control the page's privacy settings ("ACLs" stands for Access Control Lists). By default, pages are readable by everyone, even random strangers on the Internet, but they're only writable and commentable by registered users; if you want tighter security, change ACLs accordingly; for example, to make your page writable only by members of HouseChai, replace the "+" in the Write box with "UserGroupHousehold".
